The Real Housewives of Millionaires’ Row
Mary L. Sieminski
When we think of Williamsport’s Millionaires’ Row, we most often think of its handsome homes—mansions built for the super-rich Lumber Barons, with ballrooms for extravagant wedding receptions and lavish parties—but this is not the whole story. There were illicit affairs, out-of-wedlock births, and more going on in those mansions.
Mary Sieminski, as part of her research for the Lycoming County Women’s History Project, has discovered some fascinating backstories, including a cat fight between a scorned wife and her husband’s paramour right on Park Street, a dilemma confronted by the Home for the Friendless as to whether to take in an illegitimate child from a rich and powerful family, and the case of a West Fourth Street mother of two who was treated by one of the best doctors in Philadelphia and returned to Williamsport pregnant with his child.
Come hear more about these and other stores and scandals of Millionaires’ Row on Saturday,
